The Three Lions will face either Switzerland, France or Holland in the Nations League semi-finals next June
The international break has been painful for football fans over the years.
Watching England thrash San Marino and Andorra in qualifying games has failed to fill the void of club football.
But the introduction of the Nations League has delivered a new-found passion and interest on the international stage.
England have beaten Spain and World Cup 2018 finalists Croatia in exciting games to top their Nations League group and qualify for next summer’s finals.
Here, talkSPORT.com takes a look at what happens next.
When is the Nations League semi-finals draw?
The draw for the semi-finals takes place in Dublin on December 3. The four games will be played next June followed by the final and a third-place play-off.
Who will England play in the semi-finals?
Late goals from Jesse Lingard and Harry Kane against Croatia on Sunday saw Gareth Southgate’s men avoid Nations League relegation and win Group A4.
Now, the Three Lions will play either Switzerland, the Netherlands or Portugal.
Where will the finals take place?
Portugal will host the finals next year with the games being played in Porto and Guimaraes.
Uefa’s Executive Committee will officially confirm them as hosts next month.
What are England competing for?
England are vying to become the first country to lift the new Nations League trophy.
Should the Three Lions win the competition, they will receive €7.5 million in prize money, while the runners-up are awarded €6.5 million, the third-placed side €5.5 million and the fourth-placed team €4.5 million.
What does the Nations League do for England’s Euro 2020 hopes?
England, along with 54 other nations, still need to participate in Euro 2020 qualifying games, which are set to begin next March. There will be ten groups and the top two teams from each group will qualify to take the first 20 spots at Euro 2020.
However, by reaching the Nations League semi-finals, England have secured a play-off place for Euro 2020, a safety net in case they miss out through the usual qualifying route.
Having won their Nations League group, England will be among the top seeds in the draw for Euro 2020 qualifying.
