Which players will Gareth Southgate be pleased with and who should have done better?
England are off the mark in their UEFA Nations League campaign but they will leave Croatia feeling they should have claimed three points instead of one despite earning a creditable goalless draw at Croatia.
Gareth Southgate’s men missed a number of chances, with Marcus Rashford failing to convert England’s two best opportunities.
The game also saw 18-year-old Jadon Sancho make English football history as the winger became the first player born after the millennium to play for the Three Lions.
But how did the rest of the team perform? Below you can see talkSPORT.com’s England player ratings.
Goalkeeper: Jordan Pickford – 5/10
Pickford was perhaps less busy than he would have expected but made a smart save to deny Ivan Perisic when called into action early in the second-half.
Right-back: Kyle Walker 7/10
Back in his usual right-back position, Walker had a very productive game and was a good option going forward. It was his splendid ball which let Rashford in for his first big chance but the striker was unable to finish.
Centre-back: John Stones 5/10
Stones had a good game generally but picked up a yellow card in the second-half, meaning he will miss Monday’s Nations League game against Spain – a big blow for England.
Centre-back: Harry Maguire 6/10
He’s becoming a regular fixture in England’s starting XI and Maguire produced another solid performance against a Croatia side without dangerous frontman Mario Mandzukic.
Left-back: Ben Chilwell 8/10
Chilwell was very impressive considering the Leicester left-back was making his full debut for England’s senior squad.
He didn’t put a foot wrong in defence and offered an extra option going forward. A full international debut well done for Chilwell.
Midfield: Eric Dier 7/10
The Tottenham man had England’s best chance of the first-half when his glancing header struck the post.
Dier was on the receiving end of a forceful challenge from Tin Jedvaj in the second-half but to the midfielder’s credit he didn’t make a meal of the tackle.
Midfield: Jordan Henderson 7/10
Worked well with Dier to nullify the likes of Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic in the middle of the park but received a caution in the first-half which means he’ll miss the Spain game.
Midfield: Ross Barkley 6/10
The game passed Barkley by in the first-half but he grew into it after the break as England controlled the tempo.
He was felled by Ante Rebic early in the second-half inside the penalty box but the referee was not interested in England’s appeals.
Right-wing: Raheem Sterling 6/10
Sterling certainly gave the Croatia defenders plenty to think about but he lacked a real killer instinct in the final third as is so often the case when he is playing in an England shirt.
Left-wing: Marcus Rashford 3/10
The striker was guilty of missing two huge chances in the second-half which he really should have stuck away. Rashford could’ve got on the end of Dier’s header had he been on his toes more too.
Forward: Harry Kane 5/10
Kane also missed a great opportunity to get England the win but his second-half header cannoned off the bar with Dominik Livakovic beaten.
The captain will perhaps be disappointed with his efforts in the first-half, however, as he struggled to make any kind of impact.
SUB: Jadon Sancho 6/10
He’s one of European football’s hottest talents and Sancho looked bright in his brief time on the pitch.
Sancho almost supplied England’s winner with an excellent run and cross from the right but Livakovic got a crucial touch to take the ball away from the onrushing England players.
