TV presenter Richard Keys criticised for questioning whether ex-Manchester United star Roy Keane was a ‘great player’
The likes of Rio Ferdinand and even Manchester City fans took to Twitter to question Keys' judgement
TV presenter Richard Keys has been mocked for questioning whether former Manchester United star Roy Keane was a “great player”.
The former Sky Sports presenter suggested Keane’s ability on the ball meant he was not necessarily up there with the likes of Glenn Hoddle or ex-United team-mate Paul Scholes.
Keys was debating this alongside beIN Sports pundit Andy Gray and studio guest Jason McAteer.
It all started when Gray said Keane has struggled to adapt to his current role as the Republic of Ireland assistant manager as the players he’s coaching are unable to hit the same standards he did when he was a player.
McAteer offered Keys a way out when he said he initially didn’t see why Keane was receiving a great deal of praise but changed his mind after playing in centre midfield alongside him for Ireland.
Gray echoed McAteer’s views but Keys didn’t back down from his original point.
And many took to Twitter to disagree with Keys including former United defender Rio Ferdinand who posted “Riiiiiiiiiiiichard” along with emojis reflecting his embarrassment of the subject.
There were even some rival fans who mocked keys with one Twitter user saying: “I’m a Man City fan and even I’ll admit Roy Keane was a great player. I can’t wait until he [Keane] sees this video.”
Another user added: “He [Keys] misses the point. Roy Keane’s game was all about winning the ball, tackling, motivating his team-mates and never saying die.
“He was probably one of the finest players ever in that role and world class at it.”
