Los Blancos survived a major scare as two headers from Mario Mandzukic gave Juventus a promising early lead at the Bernabeu.
The Serie A leaders were beaten 3-0 in Turin last week, but grabbed a lifeline in the tie after just 90 seconds and then slashed the deficit to 3-2 on aggregate in the 37th minute.
Against all odds, Blaise Matuidi then wiped out Real's lead with a tap-in from a Douglas Costa cross which was spilled by Keylor Navas in the 61st minute.
However, Mehdi Benatia’s clumsy challenge on Lucas Vazquez conceded a penalty three minutes into injury time. Gianluigi Buffon was sent off for his furious reaction to the decision, leaving Ronaldo to step up against substitute Wojciech Szczesny.
The Portuguese star blasted the ball into the top right hand corner to send Madrid through.
STAR MAN – Mario Mandzukic
Although Juventus ended up a beaten side on aggregate, it was Mario Mandzukic who made the major difference in earning their win on the night. The Italian champions won 3-1 thanks in no small part to two headers from the Croatian who bullied his opposition in the air early on.
MOMENT OF THE MATCH
The moment of the match lasted for four minutes! Mehdi Benatia’s foolish challenge on Lucas Vazquez prompted referee Michael Oliver to point to the penalty spot and chaos ensued. A seething Gianluigi Buffon raged in the face of Oliver and was sent off as a result, leaving him unable to face Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty. However, it likely wouldn’t have mattered as Ronaldo smashed what appeared to be an unstoppable strike into the top right hand corner of the net, leaving Wojciech Szczesny with no chance.
